The Knights of Columbus
The Knights of Columbus is a global Catholic fraternal service order founded by Michael J. McGivney on March 29, 1882. Membership is limited to practicing Catholic men. It is led by Patrick E. Kelly, the order's 14th Supreme Knight.
The organization was founded in March 1882 as a mutual benefit society for working-class and immigrant Catholics in the United States. In addition to providing an insurance system for its members, its charter states that it endeavors "to promote such social and intellectual intercourse among its members as shall be desirable and proper". It has grown to support refugee relief, Catholic education, local parishes and dioceses, and global Catholic social and political causes.
Bishop Crimont 4th Degree Assembly, #1992
Members who wish to live out patriotism together can join “the Fourth Degree.” Members of this degree have the special honor of holding the title “Sir Knight,” participating in color & honor guards, and organizing programs that promote Catholic citizenship. They also become part of a Fourth Degree Assembly in their area. There are more than 3,500 Fourth Degree assemblies around the world.
The Bishop Crimont Assembly 1992, based in Juneau, Alaska, takes their name from the first Vicar Apostolic of Alaska, Joseph Crimont.
Bishop Crimont
Joseph Raphael John Crimont SJ (February 2, 1858 – May 20, 1945) was a French-born Catholic bishop and Jesuit missionary. He was the first Vicar Apostolic of Alaska (now the Diocese of Fairbanks), serving from 1917 until his death in 1945. He oversaw notable growth in the number of parishes, clergy, and institutions during his 28-year tenure. By the time of the silver jubilee of his episcopal consecration in 1942, the vicariate had 44 churches, 30 missions with chapels, eight diocesan priests, 20 Jesuit brothers, and 68 religious sisters, including members of the newly created Sisters of Our Lady of the Snows for Alaska Native women.
